I currently have 1.14 edition of Diablo II. I used to have it with a previous patch, and in that patch I could make a copy of my save game files, and go to Charsi and imbue an item. If I didn't like the item, I could use a different copy of the files to do another imbue until I got an item I liked. 1.14 doesn't either doesn't like this, or I doing something wrong, because when I try to load that copy character, I get an error message about the character being a bad version. Has anyone got any suggestions as to how to achieve this?

Runic talons have qlvl 81, and will have affix level 63 even at ilvl 1, so you should be able to imbue these as soon as you get your charsi quest. If you choose a different base, you need to check that the qlvl gives a high enough affix level. Note you can enter ilvl in that affix calc and it will tell you the affix level. Charsi will turn the item into a rare item, by adding 3-5 magical attributes to it. You can choose to wait until later in the game to imbue an item, since the quality of the attributes added to it are based on your character's level. Fuse xfs.
